The story of Ganesha and Kubera’s pride begins with Kubera, the treasurer of the gods and the wealthiest being in the universe, who grew immensely proud of his boundless riches. Wanting to show off his wealth, he decided to host a grand feast at his palace in Alakapuri and invited all the gods, including Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Lord Shiva immediately saw through Kubera’s vanity and pride. He politely declined the invitation but suggested that Kubera take his young son, Ganesha, instead. Shiva playfully warned Kubera, “My son has a very healthy appetite. Make sure you can feed him well.” Kubera confidently laughed it off, boasting that his kitchens could feed thousands of Ganeshas without running out.
When Ganesha arrived at the palace, he sat down to eat. The attendants served him delicious delicacies, which Ganesha devoured in seconds. He asked for more. More food was brought out, but Ganesha finished it instantly. Soon, the palace kitchens ran completely empty. Terrified cooks prepared more food using all the remaining grocery stores, but Ganesha ate that too. Still unsatisfied, his hunger began to rage. Ganesha started eating the royal gold plates, the silver utensils, the palace furniture, and eventually threatened to eat Kubera’s entire palace—and Kubera himself!
Panic-stricken, Kubera rushed to Mount Kailash and threw himself at Lord Shiva’s feet, begging for help to save his kingdom from Ganesha’s insatiable hunger. Shiva smiled and explained to Kubera that food served out of pride and ego can never satisfy anyone. Shiva then gave Kubera a handful of roasted rice and told him to feed it to Ganesha, but with one condition: it had to be offered with genuine love, devotion, and humility. In many versions of the story, it is Goddess Parvati who gives the rice to Ganesha with her maternal love.
Kubera rushed back, gave up his pride, and offered the handful of rice to Ganesha with a genuinely humble heart. As soon as Ganesha ate that single handful of rice, his massive hunger was instantly satisfied. He smiled, blessed a deeply humbled Kubera, and taught the world that the smallest offering given with love is far greater than the grandest display of wealth. The story remains a timeless lesson in humility, devotion, and the true meaning of generosity.
